Welcome to the home page of IREMT, a collaborative project implemented by the Mathematics Departments
of Louisiana State University and Michigan State University. This NSF-funded project aims to strengthen
the mathematics preparation of K-8 teachers by the continued development of a one-year college course taught in
a mathematics department and by the creation of materials to support instructors teaching such courses.
The long-term goal is to create a cohort of mathematics graduate students and faculty with professional
expertise in mathematics courses for elementary teachers.
The key motivating idea for this project is the existence of an intellectual domain called ''mathematics knowledge
for teaching'' that includes mathematics content knowledge and aspects of pedagogy, but is a distinct body of knowledge.
This project will create and pilot test three products that will help mathematics departments implement,
create, and improve courses for elementary teachers. These materials are:
- A manual that provides lesson plans and guidance to instructors and departments
- Web resources for instructors, including an expandable bank of carefully-selected quiz and exam questions
- Practice exams for students.
All three products are now available on this web site.
